US fascism: Chile must stop supporting Venezuela

CHILE PRESSURED TO PULL BACK FROM SUPPORTING VENEZUELA

By Colin McMahon - Chicago Tribune*

SANTIAGO, Chile - Days before a scheduled vote on whether Venezuela should get a seat on the United Nations Security Council, the Chilean government is coming under new pressure to distance itself from Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.*

The latest catalyst from the provocative Venezuelan leader is a military agreement with Bolivian President Evo Morales. Among other things, it calls on Venezuela to help Bolivia build new army bases there, including several along Bolivia's borders.

The deal unsettles Chavez critics not just in Chile but across South America, particularly in nations that share a frontier with Bolivia.

Yet the center-left government of President Michelle Bachelet says Chile has no reason to worry. Such military agreements are not unusual, officials point out. And Bachelet remains inclined to support Venezuela and not Guatemala for a Latin American seat on the UN Security Council, sources said.

The debate splits not just Chile's political leadership, but also Bachelet's ruling coalition, with Christian Democrats urging the socialist Bachelet not to back Chavez. Even Bachelet's foreign minister has spoken out against Venezuela's bid.

"The political majority among the democratic parties is not for supporting Venezuela," said Sen. Sergio Romero, a leader of the center-right National Renewal party and member of the Senate's foreign relations committee.

"ONE REASON IS IMAGE," ROMERO SAID. "ANOTHER IS THE CONVICTION THAT VENEZUELA WITH CHAVEZ IS AS DANGEROUS AS A MONKEY WITH A KNIFE."

[I wonder if Romero and his CIA ilk is just mad, bribed or how 'they' can blackmail him. A Chilean with a working brain doesn't spout stupid things like this. Romero probably is an ex Pinochet-aficionado - HR]

Venezuela has been working hard to line up support for its Security Council bid, which is scheduled to be put to a vote Monday. And the Bush administration has been working hard to block it in favor of Guatemala.

Each side accuses the other of buying votes. Venezuela says the United States is threatening small countries with the cutoff of aid if they do not support Guatemala. The U.S. says Chavez's practice of spreading around cut-price oil and direct financial aid is a clear effort to win favor.

The conflict over the UN seat, one of two non-permanent spots on the council reserved for Latin America and the Caribbean, presents Chile and others in the region with a dilemma.

Do they anger the United States, which still has diplomatic and economic levers in the region? Or do they anger Chavez, who happily plays the energy card and unlike President Bush has a strong base of popular support throughout Latin America?

In Santiago's case, Chavez is not making the choice any easier. Though Bachelet is leaning toward supporting Venezuela, the divisions within her Concertacion coalition may persuade her to abstain, sources said. - [Fascist US pressure. - HR]

The debate over the Venezuela-Bolivia military deal broke last weekend when the conservative Santiago newspaper El Mercurio* splashed news of it across the front page. Though the agreement was signed in May, and Bolivian officials had quickly informed their counterparts in Chile, little was known publicly about the accord.

Relations between Bolivia and Chile have been mostly strained for a long time, going back to the War of the Pacific in the late 1800s. Chile won, Bolivia and Peru lost, and Chile seized Bolivia's only route to the sea.

Bolivia wants to regain a path to the Pacific, and the nations spar over that, over use of the Silala River and over other issues. But militarily, the Bolivia-Venezuela deal does not amount to much, defense analysts say.

Chile has one of the region's best-equipped and best-trained militaries. That a small and poor country such as Bolivia, even with Chavez's help, could pose an offensive threat is almost unthinkable. Even Chavez's fiercest critics grant that.

"WITH CHAVEZ OR WITHOUT HIM, WE CRUSH BOLIVIA IN A MINUTE," ROMERO SAID. "THE PROBLEM IS MAKING A PRECEDENT OF THE POLITICAL AND MILITARY INTERVENTION IN ANOTHER COUNTRY."

[Romero is the typical 'Yanqui stooge' - backed by Kissinger's CIA - like when they killed Allende and the dreams of many Chileans. I lived there from 1972 until I was jailed twice and declared 'persona non grata' in July 1974 - and saw it all happen. Bachelet should jail all those anti Chile assessinos and throw out the US embassy destroying the country. And after arrest of the collaborators take them to honest courts and judges. - HR]

The Bachelet government acknowledges that some elements of the accord, mostly about mutual aid, are vague enough to deserve further study. But the agreement is similar to military cooperation deals Chile has with other countries.

And the military aid Bolivia receives from the United States far outstrips what it will get from Chavez.

Still, Chavez did not help matters, or do Bachelet any favors, with comments last week. Alluding to rumors of a possible coup attempt in Bolivia, Chavez said Venezuela would act to protect Morales, a key ally of Chavez.

"Let's be on alert," Chavez said. "Venezuela will not stand by with its arms crossed if the Bolivian government and the Bolivian people are assaulted, from outside or from within."

That brought a quick response from Bolivia's consul general in Chile, Jose Enrique Pinelo, who told El Mercurio that his country "accepts no type of foreign intervention, come what may." - [The US propaganda paper 'El Mercurio' is owned by Chilean fascistas, the Edwards family, which before the coup of 9 September 1973 - our 9/11, when Allende was suicided, flew to the US. El Mercurio has always supported US fascism, Kissinger, the CIA and those who run the US. - HR]

Officials in Paraguay and Peru have also expressed concern about the deal, with Peruvian President Alan Garcia praising Peru's relationship with Bolivia and taking aim at Chavez. - [Paraguay always was a US colony where they put Stroessner on his bloody seat. He ordered nation wide crimes against humanity for the US/CIA. Peru with it's Japanese/US poodle did the same. - HR]

"What is a third country doing coming between two countries that have always been brother nations?" Garcia said, adding that one has to expect "any such thing" from the Chavez government.

Peru last week suggested that Uruguay be put forth as a compromise candidate for the UN Security Council and that Venezuela and Guatemala step aside. Others in the region have suggested the Dominican Republic.

AND ON THURSDAY, THE NAME OF ANOTHER POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVE CANDIDATE WAS MAKING THE DIPLOMATIC ROUNDS: CHILE.
