The EPA closes America's science libraries and destroys its documents!

A LATTER DAY VERSION OF THE BURNING OF THE LIBRARY OF ALEXANDRIA?
The Library of Alexandria was at one time the largest library in the world. There is no way to even guess at how much was lost to civilization when it was burned. Who ordered its burning is controversial. Did the Roman conquerors order it burned? Did fanatical Muslims order it destroyed? There are several theories which accuse various groups or persons of ordering the burning.
Whoever ordered it burned had the same kind of mentality as the PNAC cabal in the White House and their legions of fundamentalist supporters. The cabal has ordered the closing of our nationwide network of scientific libraries. Books, documents, periodicals, films, photos, and so forth are being destroyed or hidden away in inaccessible, unknown tombs. (See appended report on this.)
The march toward fascism goes on unabated. Will Nancy Pelosi call a press conference to passionately denounce this? Will Hillary Clinton grab the chance to show us she is an ardent defender of democracy and the First Amendment? Will presidential choice John Kerry denounce this unprecedented fascist action? Let's count the Dems who rise to the occasion. Mind you, this is a national emergency. If none of them arises to the occasion within the next 24 hours, it just may be way too late. In fact, it may already be too late.
Not only is this a crime against the American people and against libraries, which are sacred institutions in any democracy, it also may be a crime against humanity. The information in these libraries could help to prevent vast catastrophes. The Ross Ice Shelf is showing signs this immense body of ice may break off into the Atlantic and raise the level of the sea by as much as 17m. With such monumental disasters now becoming real and present possibilities, it is not a good time to be closing down our national chain of science libraries with their massive copies of EPA record keeping. This could turn out to be worse than the burning of the Library of Alexandria if crucial data are lost regarding global warming.
THE CABAL HAS BECOME AS INSANELY ANTI-INTELLECTUAL AS THE WORST OF THE ITALIAN FASCISTI OR GERMANY'S NAZIS. UNREASON AND ACTION WERE THEIR TWO GODS.
Today's appended item is very short and to the point. It also is a shocker. Cynical as I am, even I was shocked by this latest action by the White House. Apparently they are going for broke in their efforts to strangle free discussion of scientific matters. I wonder how far have we advanced from Torquemada. I know that fascism is supremely anti-intellectual, but this action felt like a kick in the gut. I never seem to be fully prepared for their monstrous acts.
This destruction of our nation's science libraries bears a mark of religiosity, which is why I recall the name of Torquemada. Belief based on inductive reasoning and logic are anathema to religionists and fascists. They share the same insane epistemology. 'Blessed is he who believes and yet has not seen,' so said a man whom vast numbers of people have adopted as their 'savior'. There is no line between religion and fascism when it comes epistemologies. Belief by faith rules in both spheres, which is why neofascists attract so many Christian fundies to their ranks. As far as both the fundies and fascists go, the destruction of our national chain of science museums is probably a blessing to them.
SHOW ME ONE WHO BELIEVES BY FAITH, AND I WILL SHOW YOU A DAMNED FOOL
This idiot will be readily sucked into the glorified irrationalism of fascism with its impassioned worship of unreason.Those who believe by faith and drum this into their children, unwittingly create tomorrow's fascists. It's no coincidence that jingoistic flag wavers and people who believe by faith are attracted to one another.
What does it matter to them if we burn down great libraries? We can gain all the most important knowledge the world needs through belief by faith. It is this habit of believing sans evidence or logic that is perhaps the most pernicious poison of the mind ever dreamed up by human beings.
It may seem like a small matter to believe in souls and eternal life and a waiting paradise ruled over by angels and a three-headed god, but the exact same mechanism used to adopt and hold such beliefs is used by fascists to fashion and adopt beliefs.
Belief by faith will in the end do more to destroy constitutional democracy in the Western World than any other force or doctrine. It is a habit that notably lacks firm boundaries. This proclivity seeps into every area of life, especially sociopolitical areas.
MARK MY WORDS -- AMONG THE FIRST TO BE TRUNDLED INTO THE CONCENTRATION CAMPS WILL BE MILITANT ATHEISTS.
All the truly great democratic theorists had little or no use for belief by faith. Reason has always been at the core of democratic theory, while unreason coupled to action for action's sake has been at the core of all fascist thinking.
Belief by faith is a form of voluntary stupidity and ignorance. It destroys individuals, families, communities, and nations.
IT POISONS CULTURE, SANITY, AND SIMPLE DECENCY.
Make no mistake. The irrationalists are the enemies of a good society and a healthy mind.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has begun closing its nationwide network of scientific libraries, effectively preventing EPA scientists and the public from accessing vast amounts of data and information on issues from toxicology to pollution. Several libraries have already been dismantled, with their contents either destroyed or shipped to repositories where they are uncataloged and inaccessible.
The scientific information contained in the EPA libraries is essential to the agency's ability to make fully informed decisions that carry out its mission of protecting human health and the environment. Members of Congress have asked the EPA to cease and desist. Please call EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson at (202) 564-4700 and tell him how much scientists rely on data and literature. Urge him to immediately halt the dismantling of the library system until Congress approves the EPA budget and all materials are readily available online.
Update, 3:00 p.m. EST 12/4: Calls are already flooding in and we've received reports that the EPA office is making the following arguments:
1. The EPA is not closing any libraries.
2. The EPA is not destroying any documents, only archiving them.
3. It is more effective to call your member of Congress.
THE TRUTH: Five libraries have already closed, with several more having reduced their hours. Evidence shows that scientific journals have indeed been recycled or thrown away. And Congress is already aware of this problem; the decision to stop the closing of libraries and the destruction of documents lies now with Administrator Johnson.
