Outrage at medals for Dutch in Srebrenica

Srebrenica: Dutch Colonel Karremans, in fact, appealed to the UN to authorise Nato air strikes on 10 July when it became clear the Serbs were bent on overrunning the entire enclave. Famously, Unprofor refused the request, saying the Dutch had filled in the official form incorrectly.

"THIS IS FOR THE HALL OF SHAME."

BUSINESS AS USUAL: BALKAN MEETING OF THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE IN BRUSSELS DECEMBER 14 -15.

FPF/HR Comment: No wonder a lot of Dutch soldiers didn't show up: they couldn't bear the shame. In reality the mercenaries in Holland - as usual part of the US junta's war machine - were awarded insignia for taking part in US/NATO war crimes because the Balkan war and bombing campaign to divide and rule - all 78 days of it - was executed in violation of international law. Banned cluster bombs were used to. It was a huge war crime by all involved. Who should get life in jail for this and not a medal.*

The whole Balkan war and bombings by the US/NATO was a classic case of aggression, held by the Nuremberg Tribunal to be the supreme international crime in that it holds within it the accumulated evil of all other war crimes. That the NATO bombing was a violation of international law was acknowledged by Wesley Clark, to the US weekly 'The New Yorker', but that admission - like so many others - was deemed inadmissible before this Security Council institution, the ICTY.*

SUICIDED?

Another prisoner who in the The Hague prison has fallen ill and now slides into unconsciousness probably followed by death, is Mr Vojislav Seselj, a 52 year old Serb politician who also is accused of war crimes by the US/NATO war criminals. Like former Yugoslovia president Milosevic, who said he had been poisoned in the The Hague prison and died.* Mr. Seselj has refused to be seen by doctors representing the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal. Seselj, accused of war crimes, could die in the following weeks if he continues his hunger strike his own doctor warns. Mr. Seselj appears before the International tribunal for War Crimes in Hague on charges of participation in an ethnic cleansing of former Yugoslavia in the 90s. Seselj rejects the indictment. The trial was suspended due to Seselj’s weak condition following a hunger strike.

So it's business as usual: Italy’s Prime Minister Romano Prodi has called on heads of government of the European Union (EU) countries to reconsider the issue of European prospective for the Balkan countries at a meeting of the Council of Europe to be held in Brussels on December 14 -15, the Serbian Tanjug agency reports. Prodi has further proposed some specific measures in that context.

OUTRAGE AT MEDALS FOR DUTCH IN SREBRENICA

Yesterday, in Sarajevo, a representative of the Mothers of Srebrenica condemned the Dutch government's awards to the soldiers, some now out of the army. "Something the entire world would be ashamed of, the Dutch reward it," said Kada Hotic. "This is for the Hall of Shame."

The Bosnian Presidency has lodged an official protest with the Netherlands after members of the Dutch battalion that failed to protect the "safe haven" of Srebrenica were decorated by their government.

The Defence Minister, Henk Kamp, pinned insignia on some of the 850 members of the ill-fated battalion headed by Lieutenant-Colonel Tom Karremans.

Accusations of responsibility for Europe's worst massacre since the Second World War, when Bosnian Serb forces killed more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys in July 1995, led to the fall of the Dutch government in 2002.

At the ceremony, Mr Kamp said the battalion was powerless to prevent the massacre. The thousands of victims boarded buses that suddenly arrived the day the Dutch commander had toasted Srebrenica's new overlord, General Ratko Mladic, at the UN base in the village of Potocari.

Clutching Serb pledges and impressed by Mladic's phoney display of bonhomie for the cameras, when he dished out sweets to a few stunned-looking children, the doomed men took quiet leave of wives and daughters, murmuring, "I'll see you soon", "We'll all meet in Tuzla", and "Everything will be fine".

But those silent Serbian bus drivers did not head west on the main road into government territory in Tuzla or Kalesia as Mladic said they would. They swerved abruptly off the highway to deserted, ethnically cleansed hamlets where the men and boys were taken off, blindfolded, herded into sealed locations such as the school gym at Karakaj and the football stadium in Bratunac, and massacred.

Then the killers combed the pine forests between Srebrenica and Tuzla, desperately trying to track down the 23,000 fugitive Muslims who had made a run for it, despite Mladic's booming, jovial promise: "Nothing will happen to you".

Thousands of executions went on until 17 July. The Dutch left Srebrenica on 21 July. Only when a few survivors staggered into Tuzla did the scale of Mladic's atrocity dawn on them. Colonel Karremans and his men are objects of deep, abiding contempt, feelings in no way mitigated by bouts of Dutch hand-wringing, the fall of the government in the Hague and the release of a detailed reports on who did what in those muddled July days.

But the Dutch did not betray Srebrenica; their UN commanders, the Japanese UN envoy Yasushi Akashi and the French commander of the UN force, Unprofor, General Bernard Janvier, did it for them. Those two, to the anger of Rupert Smith, the British commander in Bosnia, vetoed air strikes against the Serbs, leaving the Dutch battalion defenceless on the ground and the Serbs in possession of what they assumed was a green light.

UNPROFOR REFUSED THE REQUEST, SAYING THE DUTCH HAD FILLED IN THE OFFICIAL FORM INCORRECTLY

Colonel Karremans, in fact, appealed to the UN to authorise Nato air strikes on 10 July when it became clear the Serbs were bent on overrunning the entire enclave. Famously, Unprofor refused the request, saying the Dutch had filled in the official form incorrectly.

When the last defences crumbled on the 12th, the Dutch commander also demanded the right to escort the surviving civilians to safety. Mladic, armed with the carte blanche from higher up the UN chain of command, simply ignored him.

Nor should General Janvier and Mr Akashi carry the can alone. They reflected an almost solid consensus in London and UN headquarters in New York - as well as Paris and Moscow - that Serbia's total victory in the wars of the former Yugoslavia was a foregone conclusion, and the Bosnians were being a nuisance for opposing the inevitable. At that time, President Bill Clinton's advocacy of air strikes was scorned in most Nato capitals as a fantasy.

CHENEY ESCALATES LUNATIC WAR DRIVE AGAINST IRAN

FPF-fwd. Jeffrey Steinberg

Seymour Hersh: " U.S. and Israeli special forces commandos are already operating on the ground inside the country, planting site markers for future bombings, and organizing sabotage operations by Kurds, Baluchis, and Azeris." In a speech in Los Angeles, Netanyahu was even more blunt: "It's 1938, and Iran is Germany. And Iran is racing to arm itself with atomic bombs."

CHENEY ESCALATES LUNATIC WAR DRIVE AGAINST IRAN

By Jeffrey Steinberg

Executive Intelligence Review - 12-5-2006 - Lyndon LaRouche minced no words in discussions with colleagues on Nov. 22, accusing Vice President Dick Cheney and the "Israeli Mafia" of being behind the latest destabilization of Lebanon-the assassination on Nov. 21 of Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel. LaRouche cited other Israeli provocations since the Lebanon War of July 2006, including a string of confrontations with French peacekeepers, and threats to attack German ships in the Mediterranean that are part of the Lebanon peacekeeping effort, as "state-of-mind" evidence of the war intent.

Things have become so tense between the French and Israeli governments over the Lebanon crisis, that French soldiers serving in the Lebanese peacekeeping mission are now authorized to shoot at Israeli Air Force jet fighters overflying Lebanon, after a failed Paris meeting in mid-November between French and Israeli military officials.

LaRouche warned that the climate is being set for an Israeli military raid on Iran's purported nuclear weapons sites, which would lead to a mobilization of support for a larger attack on Iran, involving the United States and other nations-with the quiet but enthusiastic backing of many frightened Sunni Arab regimes, which are being stampeded by the Cheneyacs in Washington into this suicidal stance.

LaRouche characterized the Gemayel assassination as a signal of Israeli plans to launch a military strike against Iran in the near future-at the urging of Cheney and his own masters within the Anglo-American "war party."

Evidence of these Cheney-encouraged Israeli attack plans have been visible in recent weeks, including in President Bush's widely reported comments to French President Jacques Chirac that, "I do not discount the possibility that Israel will attack Iran, and if it does this-I will understand it." Those comments were reported in the Israeli daily Ha'aretz on Nov. 22. And President Bush has reportedly repeated the point recently in several other venues.

A Nov. 22 editorial in Ha'aretz signed by Gideon Samet further warned of just such an Israeli sneak attack on Iran: "Close your eyes and think about the possibility that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, together with the chief of staff, the minister for strategic threats, and his other advisers, will wrack his brain and decide to act against the Iranian nuclear threat-and imagine what this means for you. This is the man," he warned, "who is responsible for managing a failed war against a guerrilla army in Lebanon. Does this make you feel calm?" Samet referenced the Seymour Hersh article, published in the Nov. 20 New Yorker magazine, which warned that Cheney is still intent on a military attack on Iran, and that U.S. and Israeli special forces commandos are already operating on the ground inside the country, planting site markers for future bombings, and organizing sabotage operations by Kurds, Baluchis, and Azeris.

BIBI RANTS

On Nov. 24, speaking in Jerusalem at a conference of the Orthodox Union, former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a close Cheney ally, openly called for Israeli action against Iran in the most rabid of terms. Describing Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as representing a greater danger for the Jewish people than did Adolf Hitler, because of Iran's alleged pursuit of nuclear weapons, Netanyahu declared, "The future of the Jewish state is as in danger as it has ever been in the last half-century."

Making a not-so-veiled reference to Israel's own extensive, undeclared nuclear weapons program, Netanyahu said, "We must use the powers that we've amassed to make the Jews no longer defenseless and able to shape their destiny and protect their future. This is the most important thing that we can do today. Everything else is secondary." Several weeks earlier, in a speech in Los Angeles, Netanyahu was even more blunt: "It's 1938, and Iran is Germany. And Iran is racing to arm itself with atomic bombs."
